Michael will explore how he has seen these Eden-like islands change and evolve over the last four decades, comparing the rapid changes in the areas with a human population, to the 97% of the islands which are covered by the protection of the Galapagos National Park which remain one of planet Earth’s most remote and pristine wildernesses

Originally from the UK, Michael is an experienced traveller who has lived on several continents, including a year working as a naturalist in the Galapagos Islands. He is the author of Galapagos: A Natural History, a comprehensive guidebook which details the natural history of the plants and animals found in the archipelago.
He has a passion for science and nature. He taught high school sciences for 33 years in Victoria, British Columbia, where he calls home. Michael uses his naturalist experience to lead outdoor education trips and finds great pleasure in seeing others get excited about science and nature. He loves to show how science helps explain much of what we see in the natural world - from tides to rocks and rainbows.
In his spare time Michael relaxes by kayaking, fishing, taking pictures, tinkering with different technologies, travelling, and exploring natural history. He has led natural history-focused voyages to the British Columbia coast, the Galapagos Islands, Canada's High Arctic, Iceland, and Antarctica.
